Press Release
EZchip Provides Production-Ready Code for its Network Processors Implementing EPON/GPON Applications
Yokneam, Israel, September 9, 2009 -- EZchip Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:EZCH), a fabless semiconductor company providing Ethernet network processors, today announced that it is offering its customers production-ready EPON/GPON data-plane code for the NPA, its new family of network processors targeting Ethernet access applications. The EPON/GPON package is the first in a series of Carrier Ethernet applications that EZchip will make available to customers deploying its high-speed and access network processors (NPUs). This will help customers expedite their system products’ time-to-market and simplify their development efforts.
EZchip’s NPA network processor, now sampling, has secured designs for EPON and GPON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) central office systems with major network equipment vendors. The NPA coupled with the EPON/GPON software package provides customers with a complete data-plane platform for implementing their OLT systems. It utilizes the programmable NPA for enabling flexible platforms that can be field-upgraded with new features through in-service software updates as new services are being required.
The solution features packet classification and processing, fine-grained access control, hierarchical traffic management with per-subscriber, flow or class Service Level Agreement (SLA) enforcement, enhanced network management and monitoring (OAM) and timing synchronization (Sync Ethernet and IEEE 1588v2). The provided code is standards compliant and conforms to all relevant specifications. In addition, EZchip is offering its customers optional professional services to add features and tailor the code to their specific architectures for enhancing their product differentiation.
With this offering EZchip provides EPON/GPON system vendors with unmatched scalability and flexibility. Using EZchip’s NPA family of access NPUs, their solutions easily scale in bandwidth and port count for building pizza boxes or line cards with 1-4 EPON/GPON ports and Gigabit or 10-Gigabit uplinks. Using EZchip’s high-speed network processors, the NP-3 or NP-4, the solution can scale further to 16-32 EPON/GPON ports per box or line card. All EZchip’s NPUs are software compatible enabling easy code migration when scaling the system capacity or building different classes of products. EZchip provides the production quality software along with source code and detailed documentation, allowing system vendors to easily and quickly introduce new and differentiating features as well as support changing standards over time. EZchip also offers its customers optional professional services for implementing these software changes.
The EPON/GPON software package for OLT will be available in October. EZchip will make available production-quality code for additional applications in the Carrier Ethernet space over time.
About the NPA
The NPA is a highly-flexible network processor with integrated hierarchical traffic management that provides system vendors with a powerful, low-cost solution for a variety of carrier access applications, including:
- GPON/EPON aggregation nodes (OLT) for optical access
- Wireless backhaul and base stations aggregation for mobile access
- Access routers
- Ethernet demarcation, access and aggregation nodes
- VDSL aggregation nodes (DSLAM) for copper access
The NPA integrates several functions normally found in several chips to allow for simple, low-power and cost effective access system designs:
- Programmable packet processing –
Featuring exceptionally flexible packet processing to support current Carrier Ethernet requirements and to future proof system designs to support new protocols and features through software updates.
- Hierarchical traffic manager – For assigning thousands of flows with specific Quality of Service (QoS) profiles and enforcing multi-level Service Level Agreements (SLA) for applications, services and subscribers.
- Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) processing offload – For generating and monitoring thousands of simultaneous OAM sessions to enable high-performance OAM support.
- Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588v2 clock sync offload – For precise time synchronization among remote nodes and switches.
- Integrated TCAM – For fast lookups through tables with wildcards, such as Access Control Lists (ACL).
- On-chip Fabric Interface Controller (FIC) – For chassis-based systems, allows use of standard low-cost Ethernet switches as the system backplane switch fabric, with direct connection from NPA on the line card to the backplane, and guaranteed system-wide end-to-end QoS.
The NPA is offered in three footprint and software compatible models:
- NPA-1: Eight 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports
- NPA-2: Sixteen 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports
- NPA-3: Configurable to a combination of up to four 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports, or combinations of 10-Gigabit and 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports
